Courier Volumetric Weight Calculator

Estimate the dimensional weight of your parcel before requesting a courier quote. Enter the outside dimensions in centimetres and the parcel's actual weight in kilograms.

Calculate your parcel weight

Use the packed parcel's outer dimensions. The estimate uses the common divisor of 5,000 for air-courier calculations.

This is an estimate, not a shipping price or booking confirmation. The carrier or service may use a different divisor, rounding increment, minimum billable weight or measurement rule. IXC will confirm the applicable chargeable weight and quote for your shipment.

How to measure your parcel

  1. Pack the shipment first, then measure the outer length, width and height of the final box.
  2. Enter each measurement in centimetres. If the parcel is irregular, use the greatest outer dimensions.
  3. Enter the actual weight shown by a scale in kilograms and select Calculate weight.
  4. Use the result as an estimate when asking IXC for a quote. The carrier confirms the final billable weight.

Worked example

A box measuring 40 × 30 × 25 cm has a volume-based estimate of 6 kg using the 5,000 divisor: 40 × 30 × 25 ÷ 5,000 = 6. If its actual scale weight is 4.2 kg, the estimated chargeable weight would be 6 kg before any carrier-specific rounding.

How volumetric weight works

What is volumetric weight?

It estimates how much space a parcel occupies in transport. A large, light parcel can have a higher volumetric weight than its actual scale weight.

What formula does this calculator use?

Length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 5,000. This is a common estimate; the applicable carrier and service rules can differ.

Which weight is used for a quote?

Many air-courier services compare actual and volumetric weight and use the higher value as chargeable weight, subject to the carrier's rounding and service rules. IXC confirms the final basis when preparing your quote.
