How to Pack an International Courier Parcel
A practical checklist for packing everyday parcels before arranging international courier pickup from Mumbai. Good packing helps protect the contents and makes the parcel easier to measure and handle.
1. Choose a suitable outer box
Use a sturdy, clean cardboard box that fits the contents without leaving large empty spaces. Reuse a box only if it is still rigid, dry and free from tears, crushed corners or weak seams. For heavier contents, choose a box that can support the packed weight without bending.
2. Protect the contents inside
Wrap each item so that hard edges do not press directly against the outer box. Use suitable cushioning to limit movement, and fill gaps so items do not slide around when the box is gently moved. Separate items that could scratch or damage one another.
3. Pack clothes, books and gifts carefully
- Clothes: fold neatly and use a clean inner bag to keep them together.
- Books: stack evenly and add cushioning around the stack so corners do not puncture the carton.
- Gifts and mixed items: wrap items separately and keep fragile objects away from heavy objects.
- Multiple items: place small pieces in a closed inner pouch or box so they do not get lost among the cushioning.
4. Seal the box securely
Close all flaps and seal the main seams with strong packing tape. Reinforce the bottom seam and any edges that may carry the load. Avoid leaving loose straps, dangling tape or old shipping labels that could confuse handling.
5. Measure the packed parcel
Measure the outside length, width and height after packing—not the dimensions of the item before it goes into the box. Use centimetres and record the actual scale weight in kilograms. Large, light parcels can have a higher volumetric weight than their actual weight.
6. Keep shipment details ready for a quote
Before contacting IXC, note the destination country and city, a short description of the contents, the number of boxes, outside dimensions and actual weight. These details help the team check which service options are available and prepare a shipment-specific quote. Do not assume every item, package size or route is accepted by every carrier; ask IXC to confirm the available option for your shipment.
7. Check the finished parcel
- The box is dry, rigid and fully sealed.
- Contents cannot move freely inside.
- Outside dimensions and actual weight are recorded.
- Old labels and unrelated barcodes have been removed or covered.
- The recipient's name, address and contact details are ready to be checked during booking.
This guide covers general packing practice only. If you are unsure whether a particular item or packaging type can be accepted for your destination, contact IXC before packing it for dispatch.
